At Blessed Sacrament School, traditions bring everyone together. From the fall Hunger March to Night of the Arts in spring, these customs create a sense of belonging and kindness. They teach us about community, faith, and joy, making our school a special place to learn and grow. Below is a small sampling of some of the traditions that make Blessed Sacrament School such a special place.
Our Hunger March is held annually, usually in late September or early October. Students put their “best foot forward” in collecting pledges before the march and in walking, marching, and outright sprinting around the block on the day of the event. The entire school participates - from our youngest early childhood students all the way through to our 8th graders. One of the sweetest parts of this tradition is seeing the older kids march/run/skip around the block with their "little buddies." In 2023, our Hunger March collected almost $26,000 in pledges. The students help choose local food banks and meal programs to receive funding as well as regional, national, and international programs working to establish food security for vulnerable populations.
Our all-school Christmas Concert is held in mid-December each year. For weeks beforehand, the students spend time practicing their individual class performances as well as the larger group performances. Some of the group performances have become time-honored traditions, including our Hallelujah Chorus and the students' recitation of St. Luke's Gospel.
Catholic Schools Week is celebrated the last week of January. At Blessed Sacrament, CSW is an exciting week filled with special dress-up days, fun activities during the school day (like all school Bingo and Big/Little Buddy get-togethers) and our Blessed Varieties talent show. The celebrations usually kick off with Family Fun Night, where students and their parents/siblings are all invited to attend Mass together then head off to an all-school party at places like the Madison Children's Museum or Keva Sports. Details for this year's Family Fun Night will be announced in December!
Get ready to mangia, mingle, and make a difference at the famous Blessed Sacrament School Spaghetti Dinner held each winter! It's a night of carb-loaded fun, all in the name of supporting our Blessed Sacrament School student athletes.
All are welcome for a delicious all-you-can-eat Spaghetti & Meatball dinner with all the fixings.
The servers and the other volunteers at our Spaghetti Dinner are Blessed Sacrament School athletes and their families. Go Friars!
Who says kids should have all the fun?!
Sometime in April, BSS parents, parishioners, and guests form teams of 8 to face off head-to-head in a not-so grueling evening of trivia competition. There's always a theme to inspire team costume creativity, and while costumes are not required they are certainly encouraged!
Prizes are awarded to the team who wins trivia AND the team with the best costumes.
Our springtime showcase of all things art-related, from musical showcases to fine art displays, improv shows, and lots more. This popular event is a fantastic opportunity for families to visit the school and see the tremendous creativity and talent of our BSS students!
Our last event of the school year is FRIAR FEST, which takes place during the last week of school. Some might call it a field day, but we think it's more awesome than that.
The whole school is divided up into teams led by 7th grade team captains. You can tell which team is which by their shirts - blue, yellow, red, polka dot, tie dye... the list goes on.
Every year the exact schedule varies a bit, but it's always lots of fun, usually pretty hot, and one of those BSS memories that will stick with our alums for a lifetime.
